Yesterday Grayson had taken the older boys back to the ballpark for the second game of the day (more on the first half of our day tomorrow), and Jake and I were at home in the late afternoon.
Jake had woken up from his nap and he was having his snack and juice in the den with me. I'd been away from him for a few minutes while I was gathering his snack in the kitchen, but other than that I'd been with him for the 30 minutes or so since he'd been up.
The doorbell rang, which surprised me because I wasn't expecting anyone and it was drizzling lightly. When I got to the door, a uniformed police officer was on the porch with his hands cupped over the storm door, looking in.
SCARED ME TO DEATH. You know how your brain does weird things sometimes, especially when in a stressful or unfamiliar situation? Well, my first thought when I saw him was, "Oh my gosh. Something else has happened to Kyser. No, wait. That's not possible. OK, then in Ben and Kathryn's family in general. No, wait. Maybe something has happened to Grayson and the boys." In that precise moment, at first I wasn't even thinking that Grayson and our boys weren't home ... I just went straight to the last emergency situation that came up and ran with it. It was very odd.
I opened the door and the officer said, "Good afternoon. We had a hang-up 911 call from this number a few minutes ago and I'm here to make sure everything's OK."
I assured him that it was, and that Jake and I were the only ones home.
Officer: "Does he ever play with the phone?"
Me: "ALL THE TIME. But he's never dialed 911 before. Do you need to come in and check it out?"
Officer: "Yes."
Me: "OK, come on in. This is Jake. He's 2. Everyone else is at a baseball game right now."
Officer: "Alright. We just have to be sure there's no sign that there's trouble."
I assured him that we were fine, and just to let all of YOU know, I totally have a plan for a situation in which there is an intruder in our house and I am somehow able to dial 911 and then the intruder stands behind the front door while I'm supposed to shoo the responding officer away. My plan includes telling the officer that everything is fine while subtly shaking my head in the universal sign of NO, then getting the HECK out of there. Because I think we can all agree that having a plan like that is just as crucial as having a fire escape plan. YOU NEVER KNOW, INTERNET.
And while I was sooooooo tempted to ask if I could take a picture of him so I could report this activity on my blog later, I was a little worried that he might have thought we DID call 911 just because I was out of things to blog about. (That's not a stretch, actually.) So I didn't ask him or even take a picture of him as he was walking back to his SUV.
But I did have the presence of mind to hit Call History, and whattaya know? Little Jakey HAD made a call.
What are the chances? So now I have to hide all our phones.
