To frame or not to frame, that is the question

Recently I asked our friend Ashley -- a tremendously talented artist -- to paint a landscape to go over our couch.

She got to work on it, and she delivered it to me last week. Here it is late at night:

And here it is around 10 a.m.

I didn't use the flash in either of these shots, and I stood in exactly the same place to take the pictures. You can tell what a dramatic difference the natural light makes in our paint and upholstery colors depending on the time of day.

I'm in the process of deciding whether or not to frame it.

The canvas is "finished" on all sides, so it doesn't look bad without a frame, but I think the nearby mantel overwhelms it a little bit without a frame.

And the LAST thing I want is for this special piece to be overshadowed by the mantel. (And it's not a small painting! It's 48" x 24".)

So, what do YOU think?

hi! my name is cat moore and I just happen to stumble acorss your blog from Urban Grace while blog hopping. :) love your blog! I happen to notice on your post that you were debating to frame your painting. I just had to laugh out loud because my husband makes frames and they are beautiful. (of course, I'm a little bias). Anyway, he got laid off in december from his day job and starting making frames and furniture full time. Im in the process of building him a website, but until then it goes to our blog. Check it out if you decide to frame! :) www.kiwiwoodwerks.com I'll be adding new ones in a few days. Nice to meet you! :)

Cat, Those are GORGEOUS! Wow. JT is very talented! I'll be in touch if I decide to go with a frame. :)

Oooh, it could go either way, but I sort of like it unframed. You could also frame it something very muted and elongate either side of the frame and matting like I did here...

Kelly, thanks for the idea! I'm still trying to take a look at it on the wall. I went for almost a year without anything in its place, so I'm still getting used to it! I will take everyone's thoughts into account, though. :)
