Have you ever wanted something, just because?

I've never been a "fine china" type of girl. I mean, we registered for fine china when we married, but we never use it. I'm on my third set of casual china since we married -- because I have a short attention span. I get tired of eating off the same stuff all the time, apparently. My original set was a department-store set, but the other two have come from Crate & Barrel and Ballard Designs.

Which is what makes this confession so surprising: I am obsessed with Villeroy & Boch's Audun Ferme pattern.

I've felt this way for a while, even going so far as to take pictures of it with my phone the last time I was in Belk so I could Tweet about it.

Then I decided that was ridiculous, so I didn't ever send the Tweet out.

But here I am now, blogging about it.

I don't actually want it, and I certainly don't NEED it. But I think about it occasionally, and I always pause to gaze at it lovingly whenever I'm in a department store.

I'm so weird.

Not weird! I have a thing for Shelley Fine Bone China from the 1800s.

Especially the Dainty series.

Nope, not weird. I'm still a bit infatuated with the "I-wanted-it-but-he-didn't" set of everyday china that isn't in stores anymore (but a mom friend of mine has it). Kind of glad we didn't get it, since I'm currently searching for our future third set of everyday china. (Looking for ivory with a pattern - but no extra color, non-rimmed bowls, mugs instead of cup/saucer. Any suggestions?)
We don't use our good china, either - and I actually have 3 sets on my house right now! Two are mine, one is a gift for my sister when she graduates from college. It's the same pattern that my paternal grandmother had, and my sis loves it. And actually? They are all white with platinum and/or a silver-gray pattern. And did I mention that there are two sets of crystal, too?
Oh, my - I think I've basically written another blog post here!

How well do I know your "just because' syndrome. I had to buy Christmas China about 20 yrs ago. When we married in '72, my dad was a a prominent man of church, business civic, scouting and university's organizations. The wedding gifts poured in (for which we are eternally grateful), but my choice of formal and casual china were not very expensive because I didn't want to wind up with 3 cups and 2 dinner plates, etc. We had 15 place settings of both china sets, crystal and so many serving pieces that I would need a banquet hall to use them all. One of Dad's very close friend arrived to deliver the gift on the day of the wedding. He brought it in a 27" color TV box. That was big then and exciting. Opened it to find a huge 7 piece silver tea service! It has spent more time in the attic that ever on display. I need to put it on Craig's list or Ebay.

I heretofore denounce you as my sister. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

I will not state the reasons here. You know them.

SHAME.

Kelly, I'll have to check it out. As I said, I don't have a "thing" for china, but I need to take a peek anyway!

RLR, I sent you an email with some suggestions. Hope one of them works for you!

Beckie, I'd take a TV over silver ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. My disappointment would have been visible all over my face if I'd been the one opening that TV box. ;)

Melissa, thanks for having my back!

SET, yes, I know exactly what you mean. I'm almost willing to disown MYSELF.
